Housing Locations
Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) operates two housing locations for researchers, students, and guests Gothic Campus (Main Campus) and RMBL 365 Building (Crested Butte). See more specifics below.
Gothic Campus Housing
Location: 8000 County Road 317, Crested Butte, CO 81224
Gothic is RMBL’s main campus and home to most research sites and facilities, including the Barclay Building-Administration Office, dining hall, community kitchen, and billy barr community center (bbcc), the Gothic Research Center (GRC) and laboratory spaces, the Visitor Center, the Wesse Youth Programs Building, and the Natural History Building, which houses the herbarium collection. Accommodations at Gothic: Housing at Gothic includes approximately 70 rustic cabins, tents, and weatherports. Staying at Gothic is similar to a summer camp experience, with accommodations varying in amenities. Some cabins may feature hot water, an indoor toilet, a pit toilet, shower, or a kitchen (cooking cabin), while others have no running water, toilet, or kitchen facilities and rely on shared community toilets, showers, and the dining hall.
Community Life at Gothic: During the summer season, most researchers and staff are based at the Gothic campus. Meals are served at the billy barr community center (bbcc)/Dining Hall, where the majority of people eat.
Requesting housing: Requests for Gothic housing are submitted as part of the standard housing request process in the RMBL Community Portal. If you have no preference for housing or would like to indicate that you are open to either Gothic or RMBL 365 accommodations, you can select this option in the RMBL portal when submitting your housing request. *Please note housing requests are made differently for workshops and conferences.
The drive from RMBL 365 to Gothic campus (main RMBL campus) is approximately 25–30 minutes in the summer.
RMBL 365 Building Housing
Location: 615 Teocalli Avenue, Crested Butte, CO 81224 (~25–30 minutes from Gothic main Campus)
RMBL 365 is a newly acquired lodging space designed to support year-round programming, collaboration, and community engagement while advancing RMBL’s scientific mission. RMBL 365 is not located at RMBL’s main campus in Gothic; the drive from RMBL 365 to Gothic is approximately 25–30 minutes in the summer. Guests staying at RMBL 365 who are conducting research in Gothic must have access to a personal vehicle. Transportation is not provided, and there is no public transit between Crested Butte and Gothic.

Accommodations at RMBL 365: Located in the town of Crested Butte, RMBL 365 offers a more comfortable, less rustic housing option than Gothic, making it well suited for researchers with families and guests seeking additional amenities. Housing is set up hostel-style, with many rooms sharing a kitchen, bathroom, and living space.
Community Life at RMBL 365: During the winter season, most staff are based at RMBL 365.
