Student Scholarships
There is no need to apply for specific fellowships or scholarships, except to indicate on the Financial Aid Form your qualifications for scholarships dedicated to a specific type of student (e.g. English/Journalism for Bill and Grace Calder Scholarship) or for students from a specific Institution (Sewanee or UCSB). Award decisions will be based on financial need, academic merit, and potential for success in field biology. You will be asked to complete a financial aid form when completing the Application.
Please note: students receiving fellowship and scholarship funds are expected to maintain adequate progress in the summer program. Students will undergo a review mid-way through the summer to ensure that they are meeting program expectations. Students not in compliance will be asked to leave the field station at their own expense.
In addition to general RMBL scholarship funds, specific endowed scholarships include the following:
Harriet G. Barclay Scholarship Fund
An endowment fund established to honor Dr. Harriet Barclay, a long-time RMBL botanist and educator. Given annually to botany students.
Belfield-Watt Student Scholarship Fund
An endowment fund established to honor the grandparents of Ward Watt. Given annually to students.
Bill and Grace Calder Scholarship
An endowment fund established by the Bill and Grace Calder Trust. Given annually to a female student majoring in English or journalism who wishes to take RMBL summer courses to increase their background in and exposure to science and science communication.
Fran Hunter Student Scholarship Fund
An endowment established in honor of former RMBL Director Dr. Fran Hunter. Given annually to graduate students or students.
Keith Krakauer Memorial Scholarship
This fund was established by the friends and family of Keith as a memorial to him and his deep love of nature. The fund can also be used to help students who have spent time at the RMBL and want to return, either as a student, a research assistant, or as a first-year graduate student. There are two criteria for awarding the scholarship. First, it should be used to help students who, for whatever reason, might not otherwise be able to attend the RMBL. Second, it should be awarded to students for whom a summer at the RMBL will be particularly meaningful.
William Y. Inouye Scholarship Fund
An endowment fund established to honor the father of David Inouye. Given annually to an undergraduate student researcher.
Lee R.G. Snyder Memorial Scholarship Award
An endowment established in honor of RMBL graduate student researcher Lee Snyder. This competitive award is given annually to graduate student researchers.
Ralph Wardlaw Watt Student Scholarship Fund
An endowment established to honor of the father of Ward Watt. Given annually to students.
Rosemary J. Smith Scholarship Fund An endowment established to honor the work of Rosemary Smith in promoting education and research at RMBL. Given annually to students with financial need and for whom a summer at RMBL would be transformational.
RMBL has arranged to offer joint scholarships for students enrolled at Sewanee: The University of the South and UC Santa Barbara. Students should indicate their eligibility on the Financial Aid Form.
